DIVE - the novel
Justin Jones may be
from the wrong side of the tracks, but heck if he won't suck in
his belly, conquer his fear of heights, and land a spot on the
Olympic Diving Team once and for all. Years later, when a series
of hard knocks coincides with the internet boom, Justin summons
the courage of his platform diving days and recreates himself
into what he sees as the least of all possible evils: a
traveling escort.
The main story
takes place in 2000 and begins with the San Francisco economy
crash, a codependent love affair, and an introduction to radical
feminist-sexual politics. The result: Justin becomes a sex
worker. But feminist ideals do not translate to a divided,
troubled culture. So while intimate affairs with affluent and
touch-deprived men overtake his urban life, Justin’s relations
with a band of illegal aliens and expatriates at a remote
mountain sanctuary only get deeper, culminating in a backwoods
baby delivery and a triple-wedding featuring three Israelis and
three Americans. |

CASTING SHADOWS
written under the pen name Justin Jones
The first chapter of DIVE (below) was recently published in a Soft Skull
Press' anthology Hooker's,
Call Girls, and Rent Boys: professionals writing on life, love, and
sex. It was featured on the cover of the
New York Times Book Review in August 2009 and subsequently sold out of it's first three runs.
"An eye-opening, astonishing, honest and
funny collection from those who really have lived on the edge in a
parallel universe… Unpretentious and riveting, their tales are also
graphic, politically incorrect and mostly unquotable in this newspaper."
Toni Brantley, NY Times
